Angel Ocasio, one of the finest clowns in America is joining Janet Tucker and Randy Christensen for this five day training experience!

Angel is the founder and director of the famed Comedifest Convention. He is a graduate of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He has been the featured performer and lecturer at basically every major clown convention in America. He recently published the new book, "Clowning: Keep It Simple. Keep It Real." This is a practical, insightful, inspiring text. In my opinion, Angel's talent is only exceeded by his heart.

You have the opportunity to learn from, and be coached by, Angel and Randy and Janet on November 7-11 in the Minneapolis area. We believe that there is a "Next Step" in effective presentations for you, and we are happy to help you to make that.

Contact Randy at pastorclown@earthlink.net or call 320.235.2019 for more information. You may send $75 to reserve your spot. We have already received some registrations. Don't miss out on this one time opportunity!

We're excited!

November 2012 Staff Coach - Janet Tucker

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 287px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--PRecYdZEUI/TxoStC1NUHI/AAAAAAAAAmY/MbjLDBXN4Ds/s400/19242_104534972906841_100000510155661_122729_1140674_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699888843454238834" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Kq52P9Rw60k/TxoStY0IJeI/AAAAAAAAAmg/86eC03ZGdgg/s400/188773_10150165753403210_522953209_8249063_1734018_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699888849355285986" />
I am thrilled to have Janet Tucker with us for the Next Step Workshop in November. Hard to believe but it was in the 1990's that the first N.S.W. took place. It was hosted by Janet Tucker and her local church. The staff included Janet, me, and J.T. "Bubba" Sikes. In the picture, Janet is on the far left, and I am doing my old man character - Mr. Oxford P. Nutts - with the Next Step attendees at the morning worship service

Janet has such a firm understanding of clowning and clown ministry. She is the one that I call when I have questions about clowning. In the late 1980's she and I met as part of the International Fellowship of Christian Magicians Convention. Through the years she has served as the director of the clown ministry department of the FCM (as I have). She also has served as the clown ministry director for the World Clown Association (as I also have.) She has traveled on missions trips, written and performed numerous VBS programs, guided a local clown ministry troupe, organized regional, national and international conventions and in the middle of all that has also been a Sunday School teacher and performs over 150 clown shows per year!

The second picture shows Janet "Jellybean" Tucker and I standing together after the WCA Clown Worship Service in New York in 2011. Standing with us are other presenters - Bruce "Charlie" Johnson and Anita "Toot Sweet" Theis.

You'll want to come and pick Janet's brain. She's forgot more about clowning and clown ministry than most of us will ever learn. And she is coming to the Next Step just to be of help to you!

Next Step in 2012

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--J-E-9lCD00/ToEoTipi9bI/AAAAAAAAAh8/Nvoua2ccVuI/s200/_Z1V7822.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656846923137742258" />
Hi folks!

I've been getting some inquiries about the future Next Step Workshop. Sorry for any confusion. A few folks have become aware that I'm planning to host a "Next Step" in November of 2012 (not 2011) up here in Minnesota.

Last springtime a few people did ask me about training them this Fall (2011). It did not come together.

So, I'm giving people over a year notice to begin to plan to attend these five days with me (and other instructors). I'm planning that it will happen a week or two after Halloween. That places this training still a couple weeks before Thanksgiving time. Usually this is a time that clowns "catch their breath" after October, but before we hit the holidays.

The "Next Step" offers personalized training for clowns that have already been into this for a while. It's advanced training about stage movement, writing solid routines, presentation, mime-based movement techniques, character development, connecting with an audience, and more! We do bring a "ministry" base to much of our training, but this is not relegated to only "gospel clowns."

Only 12-15 attendees will be allowed to attend. Plan now about $350 for registration and then you will also need to cover housing expense and a meal or two a day. More information will be upcoming as we draw closer.

FYI, if you want to reserve your spot, please let me know. I also accept $75 as a downpayment to hold your place in the group. You can call me at 320.235.2529 or email me at pastorclown@earthlink.net

It's going to be a blast! I hope you can join us.

Houston Sunday Morning Service

<img style="display:block; PlumCute, Smirky, Fluffy, Miss Lucy, Rosebud, and I had a wonderful time sharing the morning worship service with almost 200 people. Our theme was "In the hard times, run to Jesus!" We talked about Jeremiah 29:11:

"I know the plans I have for you, plans not to harm you, but to prosper you; to give you hope and a future."

Jonah had to decide to go God's ways. When he did, God blessed him. When he chose to go his own way, it caused BIG problems, not just for him, but also for the others on the ship.

Sometimes when things are tough, God is trying to draw our attention to Him. Unfortunately, many people - when times get tough - do not "run to Jesus" but "run away from God."

I ended the service by doing a mime presentation of "Untitled Hymn" by Chris Rice (Come To Jesus). Many people have been contacting the church to see if they can get a video of the service. It was a wonderful morning. Praise be to God!

Time to Register!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hzpC9nq9QOA/TSojfLOA89I/AAAAAAAAAbM/w_h49mK1Al0/s200/34902_1487616480814_1545992124_1150538_778735_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560295708436788178" />
Hey Friends!
Greg and I are looking forward to our time in Houston. But, as of now, our paid registrations are quite low, so we are hoping that everyone will get their registrations in during the next two weeks. We cannot host this event if we cannot afford to fly there! (...makes sense, huh?)

Registration is at $350 for these 5 days. I do understand that would be considered a "professional fee" rather than a hobbyist type of expense. But, this is professional training beyond what you can find anywhere else. Check out the expenses for places like UW-LaCrosse Clown Camp, Celebration Barn Theatre, NY Goof School, and others and you will find that we are lower than all of those professional training events.

In the past, some attendees have only come for a day or two. In those instances, those attendees had pro-rated registrations ($100 per day). We would be willing to do that with you, if need be.

Hope to see you in Houston!

God bless ya!

Randy & Greg

Greg Phillips IS Funbelievable!

I'm excited to announce that Greg Phillips will be joining us for our Next Step workshop. I met Greg years ago at the International Fellowship of Christian Magicians Convention. He was emceeing the evening program that I happened to perform on...so we shared a dressing room.

When I saw this guy in action, I honestly thought, I've NEVER seen a better emcee. Greg commanded the stage while he also helped the audience relax and grow in anticipation for the next act. We laughed and laughed. He made EVERYONE look good. (EVEN ME!)

So anyway, Greg has agreed to join us and help us with magic routines and performance concepts. Here's a bit more about Greg:

Greg Phillips has made a lifetime career of comedy magic and ministry. His credits include performing as the warm-up act for Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld and numerous others. Greg worked on Christian radio as the #1 morning show commentator in Florida. Greg is a creator. Greg has numerous magic effects on the professional market. He also creates gospel magic effects. He worked as a rep for Daytona Magic for a number of years and now is the president of the SeaCoast Magic Club.

Greg understands design and what impacts the emotions of an audience. He has designed and marketed creative night clubs — one which was bought out by Disney.

Greg is also an evangelist and a pastor. He has guided over 20 missions trips featuring children’s outreaches including clowning, puppetry, drama, music, juggling and magic.

Red Skelton said of Greg, “You are magical, charming and funny! What a combination. You will go places.” And Greg is! He’s coming to the Next Step workshop!

For more information on Greg and his creative ministry go to www.gregphillips.net

Next Step Location 2010

Our Next Step workshop will be held at the facility of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, with our primary hostess being Jennifer Howard. The church is located at:

Cokesbury United Methodist
10030 Scarsdale Blvd
Houston, TX 77089
Office phone: 281-484-9243

We do not book your hotel for you. There are a number of options in the area. Jennifer recommends these:

Hampton Houston - Pearland
6515 Broadway Street
Pearland, TX
$79.00 (breakfast included)
1-281-484-9243
(This is a brand new hotel and the manager did give us a lower price.)

Courtyard Marriott
9190 Gulf Freeway
Houston, TX
$75.00 (includes shuttle to and from Hobby Airport, also to dinner)
1-800-230-4130
(This is the one that the "Joey to the World" conference usually uses.)

As people register for the Next Step workshop, they may note that they want to share a hotel room with roommate. How do we improve each of these areas? Many specifics will be shared and guided. This is a "hands on" workshop where you will experience each of the areas shared.

The workshop ends with the Sunday morning family worship celebration at our host church. YOU -- yes, you -- the participants will be presenting the morning worship service, including the numerous things we worked on during our time together. It's awesome to be ministering along with other clowns.

Please understand that "the Next Step" is intended to be just that...a gathering of folks that have already taken the first few steps in their clowning. We will not be having sessions on make-up, costume, basic character, etc. Those foundations should already be somewhat established in your clowning prior to applying to attend the "Nest Step" workshop.

I have prepared a registration form plus other information for those who desire to attend. Email me at pastorrandy@willmarag.org and I'll send it out to you.

The registration cost is $350 per person. A $50 credit is given to returning Next Step alumni. You may reserve your place by sending $75. Cancellations less than two weeks in advance and you lose your $75.

Recommendations for hotel accommodation will be shared with you upon request.

Let's do it! This is going to be great!

P.S. You may want to take time to scan through a number of the previous postings to understand more about the Next Step format and process. I hope to see you there!

Randy

Character and Cross and the Clown

This summer, I've sent off the article "Character and You" to the Fellowship of Christian Clowns magazine. I’ve changed the gal’s name since I have not checked with her about sharing our personal discussion. Here is what I wrote back to “Joanie.”

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0in; We will talk about character growth some at the “Next Step” workshop.

Don't be discouraged by that sense of being "Joanie" more than "Smiley". You probably have read my blog article already, on "Are Clowns Actors?" If not, I encourage you too. You may find it at www.pastorclown.blogspot.com. (Go to February 2007 posting).

Really, the clown is more "you" than it is just some imaginary fantasy character. It's just "you" being let out in a more "concentrated" fashion. (Like orange juice concentrate). Does that make sense? The humor is more pointed than normal. The emotions are more distinct and clear. The compassion is shown in stronger open fashion. There is a stronger focus on the moments of interaction. The lines of differentiation are more marked. Comedy is broader.

Even in your clown image, the lines on the face are more distinct than normal. This is part of what makes the clown "bigger than life"...yet, it is inspired by the everyday life of the clown.

I believe that true clown character is not so much a departure from one's true character, but is a display of one's character/personality through a funhouse window. Some areas are more prominently displayed – exaggerated. Other’s are almost totally ignored.

I look forward to discussing this more with you in just a few weeks!

Seriously Clowning,

Randy Christensen

It seems to me that a person beginning clowning starts off in one of two ways:

First scenario - The person begins by working to create a separate playful personality—something that is totally set apart from one’s normal self. The person is acting the part of “a clown.” This may be uncomfortable for the person in make-up, not feeling natural, and may really emotionally stretch the person’s comfort zone. The starting clown may feel like a “fake.”

But, this is a necessary exercise in learning a new skill. It’s not comfortable when a person first tries to ride a bike. A person learning juggling will drop. An award-winning make-up artist only develops the skill by doing it over and over and over again. Honestly, this is also how a person learns his character.

Second scenario – The person begins by slapping on Halloween make-up, relying on the outward appearance to carry his complete credibility as a clown. There’s no character development, only a “clown appearance.” He’s a person simply wearing make-up.

This person would be wise to watch other clowns in action. Watch classic clowning on YouTube and other websites. Watch DVD’s of old circus and silent screen performers. My favorites are Fatty Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

The person should think of the specific characters that makes him/her laugh. What is it about those characters that makes one chuckle? Find one or two things, and try to incorporate that thought process into your clowning. It will help your own clown character begin to develop.

Study character development. A host of material is shared in theatre training, but possibly my favorite place to learn about character is by studying puppetry and ventriloquism.

Somewhere in the middle – between imaginary comedy character and your own real personality – lives the clown. There must be enough “reality” in order for people to consider you to be real. Yet, there must be enough “fantasy” for people to believe you are more than just a person in make-up.

I’ve said for years, “Clowns develop much the same as Christians do. You read, study, pray, practice, and LIVE IT!”

Bless you as you continue to grow in your clowning, and growing in Christ.

Right now we are polishing the schedule and preparing to share our plan for growth with you. It's going to be exciting!

Here are a few things you will want to plan for:

1. Please plan to be here at 3:00 Wednesday afternoon. This will allow time for you to make the trip to Willmar from the airport in Minneapolis, or wherever you may be coming from. Also, for those that are closer, it may allow you time to check into your hotel before coming over to the church. Once you arrive here at the church on Wednesday, you will stay here until about 8:30 p.m. We will start off with a time of acquanting ourselves with each other, discuss some ministry thoughts, have a "family style" supper at the church, and you will also watch Bruce and I do two chapel services for different aged children that evening.

2. The Next Step workshop is a time of active learning. There will be some lecture times, but there will also be a lot of time working on stage presentation, movement, character, timing, etc. The highlight of our time together is our Sunday morning Kids Church presentation. We present two Kids Church services (9:00 and 10:45). These services last approximately and hour and 20 minutes. When I say "we present" I mean YOU! We will work together on writing and performing material during our workshop. We may use that in the Sunday morning services. Some of the material presented in Kids Church may be one of the routines that you are bringing to work on with us. For many of us, this is a very fun time ministering along with other clowns. If you are not able to be with us for the Sunday morning due to your personal ministry commitments, we understand. Please let me know in advance of the workshop beginning so that I may avoid any awkwardness with the other attendees. I'd just like to know "up front." Thanks.

3. I will be picking up Bruce at the airport on Tuesday. He will be flying out once again on Monday. If you need to fly into Minneapolis, and will be arriving and leaving at a time that somewhat coincides with Bruce's transportation plans, know that I'm willing to pick you up and have you ride along with us. Just let me know.

Looking forward to having you here in less than a month!

Randy

Time is Running Out!

Hey Folks!

Tommorow is October 1st. We are just about a month away from the Next Step workshop. Unfortunatly, at this time I only have 5 paid registrants. We will make the decision whether we need to modify, or cancel the Next Step training within the next week. We are unable to financially make this happen if we do not have at least 9 people.

Hopefully I will have good news within the next couple of days!

Bless ya!

Randy

More Insights To Consider

Please take time to read some of the articles on www.pastorclown.blogspot.com These provide concepts to consider prior to coming to the Next Step workshop. It's a crazy schedule, but I'm lovin' it! (even more than McDonalds)

During these days, I also take time to imagine new scenarios and situations as a clown. You may do that too. Dream about the character and what would happen in the different settings you may find yourself in.

Make sure that you write down these thoughts. Get a notebook, or file it on your computor. Personally, I like the tactile method of putting it in a notebook or card file box. That way, I can also sketch a picture that presents the comedic image.

This may be the beginning of a routine. This is the kind of stuff that we can work on at the Next Step workshop. Some folks come with "finished" routines that they want to show us. Uh, that's alright. But the best use of your time (and our time) is if you want feedback on ways that routines can change and improve. Plan to show us skits or routines that are "in process," if you want feedback. Bruce's and my goal is to give you feedback that helps you connect better with your audience and also helps you bring the message clearly through (if it's a routine with a message, that is.)

So, start dreaming! Write that stuff down. Keep track of it. There have a been a number of times that I've done that, and then, actually years later, I pulled out the paperwork and the solution to the inspiration hit, and I had a NEW routine to present to my audience.

Bruce "Charlie" Johnson Joins Next Step

Hey Everyone!

I'm thrilled to announce that Bruce "Charlie" Johnson from Washington state is going to be with us at the Next Step workshop. Bruce is known as one of the premier clown historians along with being on the leading edge of teaching creativity, magic and stage craft to clowns.

About a decade ago, Bruce joined me to teach a Next Step workshop in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I'm so glad that he's able to be with us this November!

Read more about Bruce at his website, www.charliethejugglingclown.com He also offers a "Thought For the Week" email newsletter that educates and inspires clowns around the world. It's a free subscription. So, if you're not on it yet, I encourage you to join.

Looking forward to a wonderful time with you all!

Randy

The Life of Leon

Greetings Friends!

I have unfortunate news. Leon McBride had planned to be with us at the Next Step '09 workshop, but has needed to pull himself out of our time together.

I just got off the phone with Leon. Some of you may be aware that last year Leon's son, Casey McBride, was diagnosed with retinal cancer. Casey went through the treatments and was given a clear bill of health...

...until now. Leon's son has just went through some additional testing this past weekend, and the doctor's believe that he now has cancer in his lungs. Casey lives in Atlanta, Georgia and has two young boys. Leon and Linda want to be free to give whatever support is needed to Casey and his family. Consequently, Leon feels the need to clear his schedule from whatever he can. He especially wants to be there for his grandsons.

Please be in prayer with Leon, Linda, Casey and their family during this trying season. I will give you updates as I am made aware. I know that Leon and his family appreciate your support and prayers. We are family. Family of clowns, yes. But more than that, ...family of believers. Let's trust Jesus together.

Planning Ahead for the Next Step

Hey Folks!

It's the second week of April and I already have FIVE registrations in my possession. Since we only allow FIFTEEN attendees, that's exciting. Most are past Next Step attendees, which is an encouragement to me. That means that they felt like the past training was well worth the investment! I'm excited to continue to build on what we've talked about in the past. We are already thinking ahead to these sessions and how we can help our first time attendees and those that are returning for MORE. (There's always MORE, isn't there?!)

One of our first time folks asked me what she should do to prepare along the way. I did recommend that folks that have never seen me or experienced sessions with me should consider picking up a few of these resources from my website:

1. My Performance - An hour long DVD of me performing. It will give you a good feel of the different styles of clowning I do, and will give a bit of perspective on where I'm coming from.

2. Clown Training - This is my "basic training" clown DVD. It's over an hour of thoughts, insights, and practical stuff about clowning.

3. Developing Clown Ministry Programs - This is a booklet that talks about how to write routines (from three different approaches). It also looks at putting together a quality program and the numerous elements it takes to do that.

Also, now that SPRINGtime has finally arrived, please consider getting outside and going for walks, playing tennis, stretching and increasing your stamina and muscle tone. We're not going to hurt anyone here at the Next Step, but you will be better equipped as a performer and as a student, if you do have some level of physical fitness. I encourage you to start making the "next step" physically.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Next Step 2009 Registration & Housing

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. I will be hosting the Next Step workshop on November 4-9, 2009 in Willmar, MN. This is for folks that are wanting to make the "Next Step" in their clown ministry presentations.

We will focus on:
1. developing strong ministry material
2. excellence in stage presentation
3. depth of character
4. connecting with an audience on an emotional level
5. working with volunteers
6. Mime-based physical movement
7. creativity

We work together on various exercises while coached by the professional staff. We also take time to view and coach individual performances. Our goal is to help you do better and be better!

The Next Step also includes various spiritual and biblical insights to help you become a better clown MINISTER. That's also part of being better.

I have prepared a registration form plus other information for those who desire to attend. Email me and I'll send it out to you.

The registration cost is $350 per person. A $50 credit is given to returning Next Step alumni. You may reserve your place by sending $75. Cancellations less than two weeks in advance and you lose your $75.

The hotel that many attendees will stay in is the Super 8 Hotel in Willmar. The workshop rate is $49.95 plus tax for November 4-7 (check out on the 8th). Please register under the block of rooms reserved for the Assembly of God Church in Willmar by contacting:

Super 8 Motel
2655 1st Street South, Willmar, MN 56201
320-235-4444

The Super 8 is about ½ mile from the church. Please tell them that you are with Willmar Assembly of God when you make your reservation. (I will not be making this reservation for you.) You may find other housing accomodations if you so desire. There is a Country Inn and Suites right next door to the Super 8. Also, there is a slight possibility I may be able to find a host home or two for those clown ministers who are not able to pay for hotel accomodations.

I'm already excited! At this point in March, I already have 12 clowns who have expressed interest. With only 15 being allowed as attendees we may fill up soon. We'll see.

Mark Your Calendar Now!

Okay folks! Here it is:

November 4-8 in Willmar, Minnesota. The "Next Step" workshop. Mark your calendar now.

We will allow 15 participants. That's all. These are great days for personal interaction with others who are serious about clown ministry performance. Past participants have told me these days are "life changing!"

We spend time learning about the next step in professional clowning and the next step in ministry that God would have for us. Generally, this training is best suited for experienced clowns who have a minimum of two years of experience. Less than that...honestly, you may be "lost." The Next Step workshop is intended to take you beyond the "buffett" of classes that most conventions and camps give. We dig deep. We don't just "dance in the puddles."

Email me and I'll send you a workshop application form.

Bless you as you clown for Christ!

Randy

It's Coming!

Alrightee.

Since I've had such great responses and feedback at the Houston, "Joey To the World" conference and also at the "Show Me Clowns For Jesus" Conference, I've made a decision.

I've contacted Jeff McMullen once again. He and I are going to block out a week to invest ourselves into clown ministers. We are excited about this time that we will have together. I believe that God will do great things in each of the participants lives and ministries.

Our goal is to enrich, strengthen and encourage experienced clown ministers. We will coach, mentor and share techniques, insights, concepts, and practical hands-on stuff with the first 15 who sign up!

When?! We are checking schedules right now. We are looking at either November 2009, or April 2010. I'll let you know pretty quick.

Also, thanks for a great article by Dezi Payne (and great recommendation for Next Step.) in the recent "Cross and the Clown" magazine.

On the Road Again!

Hey Folks!

Thanks for checking out this update.

I'm happy to tell you that I'm doing a lot of performances. When it comes to clowning, I'd rather DO IT, than just talk about it.

I'm doing a few Christmas shows as Oxford P. Nutts with my son, Ben. In this show, the audience is invited into the living room of Oxford P. Nutts to enjoy the Christmas celebration. We're working on some new routines which are reminiscent of Abbott & Costello dialogs. How fun!

Also, Ben and I have met with the incredible Mr. Don B! (http://www.donbministries.com/) and we have began working through some concepts and performance aspects for a new touring show. We are hoping to open this in central Minnesota at the end of next March and beginning of April.

With all of that said, you may imagine the pace of life right now, along with my local church programming and community performances.

Consequently, Jeff McMullen and I have not set a date nor time to come together for a Next Step workshop. My thoughts?.........possibly in the fall of 2009. Maybe in 2010.

I know that Jeff has considered doing a small group training for clowns at his new facility in Appleton. You may want to contact him about that at 920.733.3444.

If you want to learn specifically from me, I do travel to other locations and teach. In February '09 I will be in Houston at the "Joey to the World" conference and also at the "Show Me Clowns For Jesus" conference in Springfield, MO. There are times local clown groups have brought me in just for a day of training. That may be an option. ...or you can come to Willmar and visit me!

I have some DVD's available that you may be interested in. The first is "Clown Training" and is about 80 minutes of clowning teaching. The next is "My Performance" which is an hour of me performing my various characters.

To see more of my thoughts and insights, you may want to read my articles in "Cross and the Clown" magazine, or in the World Clown Association "Clowning Around".

During this time, I'm learning and growing. The best way to learn one's character and how to communicate with an audience is simply by getting out there and DOING IT. And that's what I'm doing. Hopefully I'll continue to grow so I have more to share with you in the future.

Bless ya today!

Randy

Still In the Works

Hey there! (No, not 2008.) If you are interested in this personalized training and advice time, keep watch on this blogspot, but also email me so I know of your interest.

Once again, we will limit the number of people that may attend this time. We want it to stay small, personalized to each participant, and highly relational.

We will cover advanced training in mime-based movement, spiritual insights, coaching on routines and character development, and also a bunch of time to look at ministry goal-setting and individual growth processes.

Jeff and I are excited about the possibility of spending time with as we all strive to improve the quality of our clowning and our ministry.

Bless ya,

Randy

Righteousness, Peace & Joy in the Holy Ghost

The theme for the Next Step clowns Sunday morning services in Willmar came from Romans 14:17 which says "The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating or drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost."

During our days together we worked writing and developing new routines to present as part of this service. We had the "Three Musketeers" show up, an incredible excerise class where they finally learned how to do things right, and a routine where clowns learned what a truley "Happy Meal" is all about.

Some of the clowns had come with current material that we used as part of the two Sunday morning services. Sparky truley "had her Father's eyes" and told us to keep our eyes on Jesus. We had a great five days together learning from Jeff McMullen and Brenda Marshall. I also guided folks through some learning experiences. It was a marvelous time and I look forward to working with many of you again "down the road." (Circus slang for "whenever I will inevitably see you again.")

With permission, I'm posting a review from Pam "Sparky" Moody from Des Moines, Iowa. She is a full-time, nationally-known clown who has attended the Next Step for the past two years. Here's her comments:

I just returned from my journey to the Next Step Conference hosted by Randy
Christensen in Willmar, MN. This was my second consecutive year attending
this fabulous training event. This year the lead instructors were Brenda
Marshall, Jeff McMullen and Pastor Randy Christensen. There is not enough
space here to describe the intensity of this weekend. Certainly not
intended for the baby clown. I have studied under all three of these
instructors on numerous occasions over the years at other conferences but
NOTHING has compared to what they gave me at “Next Step!” We really dug-in
and looked much deeper into our character, our performances and ourselves.

A favored feature of this event that I appreciate is the small class size.
Randy limits it to no more than 14 students so your training is intimate and
almost a tutoring atmosphere. It’s intense, exhausting but yet
exhilarating! It is equally rich in spiritual enrichment and renewal.

It’s difficult to take classes from Randy and Jeff since clowning isn’t their primary
business. Randy is a fulltime children’s pastor and Jeff not only owns a
martial arts center but also works the corporate world as a motivational
speaker. They present very rarely at entertainer conferences and I
sincerely appreciate their time in presenting this workshop for clowns!
The conference was hosted by his church in Willmar, MN.

At his time, I don’t think Randy has a concrete plan for further conferences
but I would recommend you check his blogspot regularly. This summer he will
also be touring the Midwest with his “Cirque Imaginings” show featuring
himself, Greg Phillips, Don Bursell, his son Ben and others. If you live in
any of these areas, watch for a show coming near you!

Sparky

Housing for Next Step In Willmar

The Super 8 hotel is about 1/2 mile down the road from the Assembly of God Church where the training will take place. A block of 14 rooms (non-smoking – 2 queens) has been reserved for March 21-24. The rate is $49.95 at the Super 8 hotel.

When we say "reserved," that means that we have them holding the rooms UNTIL about two weeks before the training. Please understand, we will plan to start on time for each session. But, we will plan to not end on time for all the sessions. Our desire is to help our participants to work through various concepts and exercises that will really be beneficial. We’re not going to try to run on a mandatory timeline. This is not a conference where numerous classes are beginning and ending at the same time. This is not a conference schedule that has to run to the minute. This is a learning opportunity where we can spend some personal time together and really dig into some areas of clowning and ministry that we often don’t have time to focus on. Here’s a preliminary sample schedule:

Wednesday: 4:00 Opening Session @ the Assembly of God in Willmar
5:00 Supper provided on site
5:45-6:15 Pre-service session
6:30 Children’s Service presented by Randy, Brenda and Jeff
8:30-9:15 Afterglow with snacks

Thursday: 8:30 Prayer
9:00 Spiritual Warm-Ups with Brenda
9:30 Physical Warm-Ups with Jeff
10:15 Sharing Value with Randy
11:00 Audience Participation Routines You Can Do with Brenda
12:00 LUNCH
1:30 Juggling, Balance and Hats (Jeff)
2:30 Writing Skits with objects (Randy)
3:45 Program Development with Brenda and Randy
5:00 Supper …hang out!
7:00 Student Demonstrations

Friday 8:30 Prayer
9:00 Spiritual Warm-Ups with Jeff
9:30 Physical Warm-Ups with Jeff
10:00 Randy:Theme and Focus/ Problem and Solution / Simple and Hard
10:45 Routines: From Concept to Performance (Jeff)
12:00 LUNCH
1:30 Insights with Brenda
2:30 TBD
3:30 Pacing, Timing and Focus (Randy)
4:30 The Power of Unified Movement (Randy)
5:00 Supper …hang out!
7:00 Student Demonstrations

Saturday 8:30 Prayer
9:00 Spiritual Warm-Ups with Randy
9:30 Physical Warm-Ups with Jeff
10:00 TBD
11:00 Refining Your Character with Jeff
12:00 Lunch
1:30 Building Rapport With Your Audience (Jeff)
2:30 Student Demonstration
4:00 Blocking & focus for Sunday’s services
5:00 Supper on your own
6:30-8:00 Run-through of program for Sunday

Sunday 9:00 and 10:45 Sunday morning children's services
12:30 Lunch on site with short de-breif
1:30 On the way down the road

As a Next Step staff, we do ask that all attendees commit to be at the Next Step experience through our Sunday morning services and not leave early. Then that evening the staff ministers to kids at Willmar Assembly of God, and on Sunday morning it is the attendees turn.

Here are a couple pictures of the 2006 Next Step group. This year's staff include these noteworthy clowns:

Jeff McMullen - Jeff toured with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus. Noting his incredible abilities in performance, clown technique and creativity, Jeff was hired as a RB&BB trainer for the Gold Unit of their circus in Asia. Jeff climbed to the top of the entertainment industry when he was offered his own theater at a major theme park. Jeff also worked for many years as a well-known costumed character for a popular restaurant chain. (Wanna guess which one?) Jeff is a regular staff member at the notable UW-LaCrosse Clown Camp. Jeff works as a professional motivational speaker for businesses and corporations, while running his family's karate school in Wisconsin, and continuing to perform. Jeff has incredible insights into making clown connections with audiences and building strong entertainment value into performances. For more information on Jeff's current endeavors go to http://www.jeffmcmullen.com/

Brenda Marshall - Brenda lives in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She is a full-time clown, wife, momma and grandmother! (shhhhhhhhhhh...) Brenda performs 100's of programs a year, primarily for churches. She is very active in the Clowns of America, International organization, having served as a past president. She is known for her caring heart as she performs for just a few while on a missions trip, or in front of a congregation of hundreds. She has served on the staffs of almost every major clown conference in the U.S. Brenda Marshall has been sharing the gospel with children of all ages as 'Flower the Clown' since 1981. Her book, 'Sharing God's Love Through Laughter ? A Guide to Christian Clowning,' was written to encourage others in this unique ministry. Brenda has performed internationally and was the leader of the first People to People delegation of clowns to visit China. Providing insights from a multi-varied background, Brenda is always a favorite.

Randy Christensen - Randy serves as the host of "The Next Step" workshop. Having started clowning in 1980, Randy has spent years honing his craft. Recognized, not only in clown ministry, but in clowning in general, Randy has been a featured performer at the International Clown Hall of Fame, the World Clown Association Convention, and the International Fellowship of Christian Magicians Convention. For more info. on Randy go to www.RandysInfo.com

Along with learning from these three instructors, you will have opportunity to rub shoulders with other attendees throughout the course of the five days. Each lunch is a family-style meal on site at the church. Many clowns are able to share their lives, challenges, insights, and encouragement during the Next Step. We all come to learn. We all come to grow.

Come join us at the Next Step! Registrations are starting to come in, so I encourage you to reserve your place now by sending $100. You can pay the rest when you arrive in March.

Keep on clowning For Christ!

The Next Step Experience

Welcome to the Next Step experience!

What's "the Next Step?" That's a question I'm often asked. "What's the next step in my clowning?" "What's the next step I should take to improve my ministry?" "What do I need to do to make that next step to powerfully connect with my audience?" At the Next Step workshop we try to answer those questions and teach the concepts that will help you take your clown ministry to the next level.

We focus on quality clowning, and quality of ministry. I'll write more about that later:

Briefly, understand that this workshop has limited enrollment. Last year (with Rev. Roly Bain) we only allowed fifteen registrants. This is a "hands on" tutoring type of environment. We give personal training, personal advice, and share our personal lives, struggles, triumphs, and insights during these five days. (Read future postings to hear from previous attendees.)

Here's some quick information to get you started:

The Next Step will happen in Willmar, MN (100 miles west of Minneapolis).
That's my home town, and it will take place at my home church.

Attendees usually stay in a Super 8 hotel just a 1/2 mile from the church. The hotel expense is not included in the registration cost.

Our tentative plan is to begin on Wednesday morning. We will most likely meet Tuesday night for some fellowship for those that arrive in Willmar on Tuesday. This start time is yet to be decided. We conclude Sunday at lunch after the attendees present Sunday morning kids' services at Willmar Assembly of God.

The registration cost is $350 per person. An additional attending family member receives a $75 discount. A returning Next Step attendee receives a $50 discount.

Registration includes: admittance to all training sessions, individual coaching, laughs, five meals, workshop notebook including "exclusive" articles, great new friendships, and the time of your life!

The 2007 instructors will be:
Brenda Marshall - former Clowns of America, International President
Jeff McMullen - former Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus performer and trainer
...and me, Randy Christensen - clown, author, performer, pastor

For more info. you may contact me at the church at 320-235-2529 or email me at pastorrandy@willmarag.org
